My Story

Over the last 28+ years, my husband, Vern, I have focused our energy on bringing healing and comfort to others, mentally and emotionally, through prayer and talk therapy as we served as lay counselors in the congregations where we worshipped in Texas and in Florida.

In 2001, I completed a 5-month, intensive prayer counseling training with Elijah House Ministries, where I came to have a better understanding of how our experiences, from infancy and even prenatally, can have a profound impact on our lives, how we deal with others, and how we see ourselves.

It is my deep desire that every expecting woman would have the freedom to make her own choices, and actively participate in her own comfort measures during birth.

My Goals as a Doula:

As a young child, I fell in love with American Sign Language.  I have served as an interpreter during worship services, in various churches since 1989.  In addition to counseling, these experiences have caused me to have a rich appreciation for understanding in communication between any two or more people who endeavor to accomplish a common goal.  This couldn't be more true than in the case of expectant families.

In addition to the parameters listed as the basic description of the function of a doula, my goals in serving families are to:

  • facilitate understanding in communication between the mother and father (or any other family member / friend) she chooses to be her birth partner, using a simple, but very effective temperament analysis.

  • provide training to fathers / birth partners so they will be equipped and confident to give comfort to the laboring mother.

  • help facilitate an atmosphere (as early as possibe) conducive to the establishment of trust from the newborn to his / her parents.

My Philosophy

I believe that each of us are designed and created by a loving and just God, (regardless of the circumstances under which we were conceived), which makes everybody worth, and deserving of love and respect.

I believe that childbirth is very intense, hard work, but is not designed to be traumatic, and that misapplication of cultural bias during the period of our history when the Bible was being translated led to the concept that women were cursed to suffer while giving birth.  I LOVE giving parents a more complete understanding that our Loving Father DOES NOT want you to SUFFER while birthing your beautiful baby (and I can show you in the Scriptures), that children are a blessing from the Lord, and in most cases, the discomfort that comes with the WORK of childbirth can be managed well through mental, emotional, physical and spiritual conditioning to promote a smoother transition from the womb to the world.

I draw on my professional training & knowledge, as well as my personal experiences, to bring understanding, provide educational & emotional support and physical comfort and, as needed, understanding of communication from your caregiver’s staff to make sure that you have the information you need to make informed decisions as they arise in labor.  I can provide assurance and perspective to you and your partner, make suggestions for labor progress, and help with relaxation, soothing touch, positioning and other techniques for comfort.  I am independent and self-employed.  As your Doula, I am working for you, not your caregiver or hospital.
